The AFM has started a new campaign to introduce our vendors to you — our customers. In a growing, globalized world where people have grown increasingly more removed from where their food comes from we think it is important to highlight those local producers and growers that go to market each week to sell us their products. Know Your Baker: Gary Molina — Molina Family Bakery

Gary Molina is the baker behind Molina Family Bakery. Drop by his booth and you’ll find hot cross buns, round loaves of artisan breads, bialys, double fudge cherry brandy brownies, biscotti, and much more. Molina's style is focused on Italian-American traditions. You can find him year round at the market. Molina Family Bakery products are also available at Donkey Coffee and Bella Vino. Q: How long have you been baking?photo 4

2011, the same time he started attending the Athens Farmers Market. But first, he started baking out of his home and people loved his products. Many customers stop by weekly to get their favorite loaf.

Q: Why did you start baking?

Because I live in Athens and I needed a job — so I created my own.

Q: What is your favorite thing to eat?

Green chile enchilada and eggplant Parmesan, tied.

Q: What is your favorite thing about the Athens Farmers Market?

It is my chance to talk to people.

Q. What is your favorite item that you sell?

All of it! I only make things that I like to eat.

Q. What is your best seller?

The Athens Sourdough bread — it's leavened with wild yeast from here, right in Athens.

(One customer stopping by during this conversation mentioned that you have to stop by Molina's booth early to get the special stuff. )

Q. How do you prepare for the market?

Molina works through the night to get his customers his delectable products. From 4:30pm to 4:30am. Those baked goods on his table are truly the freshest.

Fun Fact: Molina worked for years in professional theater.
