Know Your Vendor #3

Know Your Vendor
#KnowYourFarmer #KnowYourProducer

The AFM has started a new campaign to introduce our vendors to you — our customers. In a growing, globalized world where people have grown increasingly more removed from where their food comes from we think it is important to highlight those local producers and growers that go to market each week to sell us their products. Each month we will feature two vendors. We hope you get to know them a little better and learn something new. If you have any questions you are dying to ask, send a message to our facebook page.

Know Your Farmer: Star Hamilton

Starr Hamilton is the face of Shade River Organic Farm at the Athens Farmers Market. She runs Shade River Organic with her husband Mike. They started their farm in 1985 and are still at it over 30 years later. Starr's booth is often filled with colorful radishes, bright collard greens and the perfect sized cabbage. Stop by at your next visit and try out some kholrabi. Starr is at the market year round and inside the mall from December – April.

Q. When did you first start attending the AFM?

1988

Q. Where is your farm located?

Our farm is near Shade, very close to the river.

Q. What is your favorite thing to recipe or food?

I am not a big cook — my husband does most of the cooking. I would say raw foods. I think everything is fair game for a big salad.

Q. What is your favorite thing to grow?

What is the most fun? Probably our green house tomatoes. We string them up and clip them to the strings and they grow super tall. It is really fun to watch and we're able to have the first tomatoes at the market

Q. What is your favorite thing about the AFM?

Ohhh, getting off of the farm and seeing other humans. I love talking to people and it's nice to hear their appreciation. People come up to you and are just really appreciative of the hard work.

Q. What is your best seller?

Our tomatoes and lettuce heads.

Q. Vanilla or Chocolate?

Ohh you've caught me in spot. I think right now I would say vanilla, but if you had asked me last night I would say chocolate.

Tidbit: You can pick up Shade River Organic Farm produce at the Village Bakery when the market is not in session. Or just eat at one of the 30 Mile Meal restaurants where Shade produce is sold to.
