Know Your Vendor #5: Creekside Farm

Know Your Vendor

The AFM has started a new campaign to introduce our vendors to you — our customers. In a growing, globalized world where people have grown increasingly more removed from where their food comes from we think it is important to highlight those local producers and growers that go to market each week to sell us their products. Each month we will feature two vendors. We hope you get to know them a little better and learn something new. If you have any questions you are dying to ask, send a message to our facebook page.

Know Your Farmer

Creekside Farm sits on Mansfield Road, just 5 miles outside of Athens. There you will find roaming wildflowers, trickling creeks, wooded hills, clucking chickens and the herd of goats. Paul Tomcho and Krista Duval own and operate Creekside Farm and have a variety of products to offer market goers. On market days it is not uncommon to see someone strolling along slurping down their drinkable yogurt. They’re going on their third year of cheese making and it’s only going to get better.

Paul and Krista approach their farming efforts through three ways: pastures to goats to products. Their farm is animal welfare approved, meaning they go through yearly audits to ensure they are maintaining the highest animal welfare and environmental standards on their farm.

Here’s what Paul had to say about their farm and the AFM:IMG_0013

When did you first start attending the Athens Farmers Market?

Around 2014, it is our third year.

What is your favorite thing to eat or recipe to make?

Chev pie – we make it with our chevre goat cheese, eggs, broccoli, kale and peppers. It is like a quiche.

What is your favorite thing about the AFM?

The interaction with the other vendors. I really enjoy the social aspect of the market

What is your favorite item that you sell?

Hmmm, what should be…. Our goat cheese itself is really good. We make a range of cheese and strive to make a mild cheese that will appeal to everyone.

Why did you decide to become a farmer?

I’ve always wanted to do this since I was a little kid. I enjoy being able to provide food for families and to help communities have access to food from their area. I enjoy owning a small business and being able to grow that.

What is your best seller?

The mixed berry drinkable yogurt.

Savory or sweet?

Savory

Creekside Farm products are also located at Village Bakery, the Farmacy, Avalanche Pizza, Little Fish Brewery, Donkey Coffee, Lui Lui, Athens Bread Company and Athens Uncorked.
