Athens Farmers Market to celebrate 40th year this June

One of the area's most celebrated institutions, the Athens Farmers Market, will mark its 40th year this June.

The first market, held on a summer day in 1972, drew participation from three producers; on the following week, there were five. That summer, market participation peaked at a dozen vendors, mostly vegetable producers. Today the market boasts more than 100 vendors offering a wide range of products.

Several "anniversary" events planned for this summer will be announced in the future, a news release reported.

The market runs Wednesdays and Saturdays, with the first Wednesday market for this season to be held on April 11. Hours are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the parking lot of the Market on State, on East State Street in Athens. 

According to the news release, the market also has a new website to unveil in conjunction with the 40th anniversary. It can be viewed at www.athensfarmersmarket.org. The Athens Farmers Market has have more than 1,100 fans on Facebook, which the market uses to post news, updates and events.

Newly elected board members for the Athens Farmers Market are Larry Cowdery, president; Chris Bruno, vice president; Kip Parker, treasurer; and Chris Burke, secretary.

At-large members are Debbie Bowers, Jeremy Bowman, Maureen Burns-Hooker, Ronda Clark and Gary Molina. Market staff include Kip Parker, manager; Jan Spring and Claudia Bashaw, assistant managers; and Michelle Gorman, promotions.
